Lesson

Title: Computing Devices 20th-century.

Objective:

At the end of this lesson, you will be able to list 20th-century computing devices, their founders, and their users.

What you should know:

You should be familiar with some computing devices like calculators, desktop and laptop computers, etc.

Introduction:

In this lesson, you will learn how the early founders of computing devices developed machines for significant purposes.

Presentation:

ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer): Founders - John Naughty and J. Prosper Eckert. The first electronic general-purpose computer was used to calculate ballistic trajectories for the US Army during World War II, develop the hydrogen bomb, and study weather patterns.

EDVAC (Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer): Founders- John Mauchy and J. Presper Eckert. The first stored-program computer was used to perform a variety of scientific and engineering calculations, Including nuclear weapons research and the design of the first artificial satellite.

UNIVAC (Universal Automatic Computer): Founders - John Mauchy and J. Presper Eckert. The first commercial computer was used for business data processing, scientific computing devices, and government applications, it was also used by the Census Bureau to process the results of the 1950 census and to predict the outcome of the 1952 presidential election.

IBM 701: Founders- Gene Amdahl, Larry Ellison, and Frederick Brooks. The first mass-produced computer for general-purpose computing.

IBM 140: Founders- Gene Amdahl and Frederick Brooks. The first transistorized computer to be mass-produced for business data processing.

DEC PDP-8: Founders - Ken Olsen. The first minicomputer for general-purpose computing, laboratory automation, and industrial control.

APPLE II: Founders - Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. The first successful personal computer for home computing education and small business.

IBM PC: Founders- Bill Gates and Paul Allen. The first personal computer to become a mainstream product for home computing, education, and small business.

Summary / Conclusion :

These devices and their founders made significant contributions to the development of modern computing. They helped to lay the foundation for the personal computers and smartphones that we use today.

Exercise :

1. List four 20th-century computing devices and what they were used for.

2. Mention four 20th-century computing founders and the devices they developed.
