Lesson

Title: Decimal Places.

Objective :

At the end of this lesson, you will be able to convert decimal numbers to a given decimal place(s).

What you should know :

Digits ranging from 0 to 4 will change to 0, while digits from 5 to 9 will change to 1.

Introduction :

Decimal places operation is the rounding off of digits after the decimal point to a given decimal place(s), Similar to significant figures, once the decimal place digit(s) is gotten, the 0s after the decimal place value(s) are neglected.

Presentation / Step:

Convert 29.325 to 1 decimal place (d.p).

=> Since we are concerned about the digits after the decimal point, i.e. .325, 3 is on the 1st decimal place.

=> 2 is the next digit after .3

=> 2 will change to 0 and added to 3, 3 + 0 = 3.

=> Every digit after the decimal place will change to 0 and the 0s will be neglected, 29.300.

=> Therefore, 29.325 to 1 d.p = 29.3

Convert 29.325 to 2 d.p

=> .325 are the concerned digits and .32 are placed on the 1st and 2nd decimal place.

=> 5 is the next digit after 32.

=> 5 will change to 1 and added to 32, 32 + 1 = 33.

=> The digit (5) after the decimal place will change to 0 and it will be neglected, 29.330.

=> Therefore, 29.325 to 2 d.p = 29.33.

Summary/ Conclusion :

=> The digits after the decimal point are the concerned digits to work on.

=> Remember, any digit ranging from 0 to 4 will change to 0 while any digit from 5 to 9 will change to 1.

Exercise:

Convert 456.1290 to 3 d.p.
